Brown Onions
NZ brown onions are famous all over the world for their long storage life, hardness, pungency and colour. The main variety, Pukekohe Longkeeper (PLK) was developed in the 1920’s from two Spanish varieties to suit NZ conditions. PLK is an open pollinated variety with a wide gene base that allows growers to progressively improve the variety. A variant, Pukekohe Early Longkeeper (ELK), also has excellent keeping qualities. Red Onions
Red onions are increasing in popularity all over the world especially as an ingredient to add colour and flavour to salad dishes. TV cooking programmes have been influential in this regard. We estimate that approximately 10% of total production in NZ is now red. The main varieties currently available are Red Emperor, Red Star, Red Wing, Red Bull, Red Keep and Red Company.
